Will you tell me who doesn’t love the holiday season? I suppose there must be some humbugs among us, but most folks celebrate at this season thanks to all the elation that we savor from our traditions and festivities. Whether favorably or unfavorably, each and every get-together invariably incorporates nibbling, generally to overkill and beyond. Lots of us seem to be certain that the holidays in some way impart to us special dispensation to indulge ourselves. And we even mislead ourselves into thinking that holiday munching isn’t going to alter our hips and our pot belly. It’s a captivating flight of fancy, but unfortunately it isn’t true.

In addition, the New Year is frequently the time when we plan to put our new eating plan into effect. We enter the party season thinking, “I’m going to drop those 20 pounds beginning January 1st. That’s my chief New Years Resolution.” But the lure of frequent temptations adds up, and when the New Year dawns, we have 30 pounds to reach our target weight rather than 20. And since the greater part of us don’t stay with our resolutions for more than a month if we’re lucky (why do you think the health clubs are so cramped in January and sparsely populated in February?), that extra 30 pounds doesn’t go away for quite a while.

The Army has a well-known motto: “When you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” Maybe you should consider getting a plan, don’t you think? It would be a bad idea to advance unprotected into the vast array of festival feasts and munchies. Make a plan, appropriate the best weapons, and you will have a winning campaign to put a stop to adding extra pounds during the holiday season.
